It's been a while since I have had an opportunity to share a new craft with you. Today I want to share the process of leather design and tooling. My mother, Terry Crump is very skilled in this field and it does take years of practice to get to where she is but it is possible. Tooling leather can be done simply with special leather stamps or can be more involved when you use carving tools to create shadows and depth in a design. I have included_ a slideshow below showing the basic process for tooling a custom wallet. You can start with a kit as done here or use patterns to cut your own pieces from larger leather pieces. The interior wallet, the part that is not tooled is made from a thinner more pliable leather while the outside, where the design is, is much thicker. Tooling leather requires a number of tools which you can purchase at www.tandyleather.com The process starts with wetting the leather surface and imprinting using a template. The template you rub down onto the face of the wet leather and it leaves a light outline of the design for you to carve & tool. That process can be seen at on Learning Leather with Jim Linnell. The tooling process is something you should practice to get it just right based on your style. After the face is tooled you can color it or super sheen it to add a protective coat. Then you are ready to sew together the pieces to complete the wallet. You can learn how to do the edge stitching with Jim Linnell as well. This finished wallet shown in the slideshow below was made as a gift so there is a monogram on it for that person. The pattern chosen left a blank space for placement of a chosen monogram. All the links above will take you to the places to help you purchase items for leather work or learning how to do leather work. I hope you enjoyed this short tutorial. I am not the leather expert myself so I can't give in depth details, so I included a couple of Youtube tutorials to help you on your way.
