Finally in northern New York summer has arrived. Kids now have the opportunity to have some fun in the sun! We have been dealing with a cold and wet spring and early summer so my kiddos are super excited to be able to go out and get wet in the summer heat. Water balloons are always a favorite at my house. They are great to cool off if you don't have a pool but there are a lot of drawbacks to the traditional water balloons. All those little vinyl pieces to pick up after the fun is over and the trouble it takes to fill all those little buggers, unless you buy those easy fill sets which are easy to fill but are also much more costly than just a pack of balloons. I had a friend text me a picture from another blog showing these AMAZING crochet water balloons. So unfortunately I cannot take credit for the idea but I did write my own pattern to share with you. http://www.leftinknots.com Here is the original blog I got the idea off although mine look a little less round they work just as well. You need to use Bernat Blanket yarn, you know that super chunky super soft yarn that comes in a giant ball; usually $9.99 each but does go on sale occasionally. It is incredibly good at sucking and holding all that great water. Also a great way to use up any extra blanket yarn you have hanging around. The ones I made weren't brightly colored but served the same purpose. All the kids at my sisters annual July 4th party had a blast, a few adults even joined in or were inadvertently included. Either way it was fun and refreshing. Although I did catch one in the back of the head... I used a J hook and did single crochet with increases and decreases to make a balloon shape.
Ch 4, join with a slip stitch CH 1, SC 4 in loop, join to beginning SC with slip stitch, complete each round this way.(4) CH 1, SC 2 in each stitch, join (8) (I had to flip it inside out if you end up stitching to the inside instead of the outside of the project. Also CH 1 counts as a stitch) CH 1, SC 2 in first st, SC in next st, around, join (12) CH 1, SC 2 in first st, SC in next 2 sts, around, join (16) CH 1, SC in each st, join (16) CH 1, SC in each st, join (16) CH 1, SC 2 together, SC in next 2 sts, around, join (12) CH 1, SC 2 together, SC in next st, around, join (8) CH 1 (doesn't count as stitch here), SC 2 together around, join (4) You can close with a slip stitch thru the top or leave it open, it isn't getting any filling so that doesn't matter, totally your choice. Cut yarn and pull thru top to inside and out a side & cut (see pictures below). They end up hanging out on some after use but the kids don't mind. I hope you enjoy this pattern and the balloons. Happy Summer!
