I'm not sure how many of you remember all the fun toys from your childhood but if you need a reminder here is where you need to go. The Strong National Museum of Play is pretty amazing. We recently took a Girl Scout trip with my daughters troop to Rochester, NY to visit this marvel. I'm not gonna lie, it is pretty overwhelming and I didn't know where to start so we began at the beginning in Sesame Street. There was a whole section that was like stepping right onto Sesame Street itself, store fronts, the trademark front door/steps and even Elmo's world. The girls couldn't contain themselves, running here and there trying to experience everything all at once. It took some time to slow them down enough for them to see all the activities. Across from the Sesame Street area was a miniature Wegmann's supermarket for the children to shop. They filled their carts, served food in the different sections and even scanned their purchases and received a receipt for their purchases. Along with the supermarket there was a TV station to do actual cooking shows and weather shows, complete with video cameras and they could see themselves on the screens while they performed. It would take me all day to go through everything they have so I'll sum it up as a place that shares the toys/playthings of the past as well as the modern play items. Alongside displays of antiques are working arcade games, floor games, life size doll houses, race cars, Legos, and oh so much more. If you are interested in details, here is where to look: www.museumofplay.org I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Although you aren't allowed to climb on the many statues and displays there are so many things you can play with that you and your little ones will most definitely never get bored. I would suggest it as a great day trip if you live in New York and it would be a great addition if you are coming in from out of state for a vacation. Here are some more photos of our visit.....

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find activities that my children will enjoy doing to keep them from being face to screen all day. I found this project on another blog; Feels Like Home, and we really enjoyed creating these.
I did find that the melting beads are really stinky so I blocked off my kitchen door while they baked, and opened all the windows to vent the kitchen. I would not recommend this project if you have someone sensitive to fumes in the house, or birds. Birds are very sensitive to fumes and it can actually kill them so if you have pet birds I wouldn't do this in the house. Using an outside grill would be better. I liked using glitter or translucent beads over the solid ones, that helps the sun shine through better. I hope you find this project fun as well. |
