My little girl was excited to join Girl Scouts with her friend from school several summers ago. We started in a small group of 5. That ended up disbanding leaving just her due to families moving away. We found a leader willing to get us back to being a group again with 5 other girls and the troop grew from there to 40+ girls! It is a wonderful group of girls, leaders and volunteers and she loves being a part of it. Due to her getting older and wanting to do more activities, we decided to Juliette but still be a part of the troop for larger activities. So we will attend a meeting occasionally but she and I are working on her patches at home. The first patch she wants to earn is the Girl Scout Way patch that will teach her the history of girl scouting and what it means to be a girl scout. We will be learning things about the beginning of Girl Scouts, it's founder Juliette Low, and patches the girls earned in the past. We will also be making swaps and learning songs. We will also participate in a volunteer project in the community. I am including in this post a pdf file, 8 Facts about Girl Scouts You Didn't Know, as well as some other printables for you to use while earning this patch. I found the article below (girl_scout_facts.pdf) from www.bustle.com and there are other sites I found some of the other info on as well as google images. The Swaps page below, I found the images on google and added instructions based on how I have done those crafts in the past.
The songs page (below) has two songs on it that I found on another site, the site is listed at the bottom of the page and has many more song lyrics for you to choose from. There is also a crossword puzzle about Juliette Low that you can print. Here is the LINK for the crossword. That Making Friends website is a great source for scouting materials. Some are free, others are available to purchase but the prices are inexpensive and the quality is great.
Below are some more useful images for earning the Junior Girl Scout Way Patch. You should be able to save and print all of these images just by using your right click button. Remember, above all Girl Scouts are friendly and helpful so be sure to do something helpful in your community!! Comment below about your GS adventures!! I love to hear from all my friends.

Hello again, I know everyone has seen a lot about plastic waste and it's dangers to our environment. I have been trying to think of ways to be cut our waste, I know my family has a lot of waste. I use baggies for the kids lunches not only for school but when I send them to their grandparents house in the summer as well and I thought that would be a great place to start. Not only am I cutting down on plastic waste, since baggies really are only good once, I'm saving money too!
In this post I'll go over how to make some easy baggies yourself and include pictures as well as a pdf pattern. Feel free to comment as well as ask questions. I'm not the worlds best seamstress but I do ok for us and I know you will too. Step one, download and print the pattern (see above), cut it out and tape it together where shown. Cut one out of lining (Rip Stop Nylon Material) and one out of your choice of patterned cotton for the outer cover. Sew together with right sides facing (wrong sides out) leaving a small gap in seam to turn right side out, snip corners as shown in picture. Turn right side out. *Note: Remove any pins used before turning it right side out....OUCH! Press with iron, making sure that the gap has it’s hem ironed inside. Fold on fold lines and press. Sew together starting at fold and all around the curved top ending at the folded edge. If you want to add extra detail you can use double fold bias tape around the edges. Make sure you put the bias tape on the flat edge before you sew up the fold. Once the fold is sewn then iron the bias tape in the shape of the bag, and sew along edge of the bag. See photos for example. Use snap or velcro as closure. If you are good at button holes that would work too, I'm not an ace at those myself so I used velcro. Enjoy! My daughter and I went on a trip with her Girl Scout troop today to the Minna Anthony Nature Center on Wellesley Island New York today. The weather was hot and sticky but the breeze off the water was nice and the sun was shining so it was a beautiful day. We had a group of 7 girls and one boy that tagged along as well. We were earning our junior nationalist patch. The girls loved the nature center/museum and all the activities that were there. Once we had our workbooks and crayons in hand we were ready to start our adventure. Unfortunately the first step, the rock wall, set the mood for my little girl. She had the misfortune of spotting multiple spiders on the wall and she went into a tailspin. It was all I could do to convince her to continue. She gave in and continued with some reluctance. We enjoyed a nice walk through the woods along the water and even saw some geese floating nearby. We had an ambitious group of girls but the adults couldn’t hack the heat so we walked about 1.5 miles and we finished our book and turned around. My daughters attitude only changed once she knew we were headed back for lunch.
I realized today that my little girl is as girly as it gets when it comes to nature. Her fear of bugs overrides anything that could be fun about nature. Although she did like the butterfly house we visited at the center after lunch. Overall it was a fun day and some great memories were made. We did try to find a geocache near the museum but unfortunately it had been destroyed by the weather. I would recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys hiking in the woods and isn’t afraid of insects. Lots and lots spiders 🕷. They also have cottages you can rent in the state park camping area as well. My children are getting older and they have almost become too old to enjoy having their mother read a story with them at night. My son is 11 and insists that he would rather play his video games 24/7 than be bothered with anything else. My daughter, at 9 years old, is usually preoccupied with her computer games or Youtube as well. Luckily she still insists on loving on her mom before bed and I can convince her to read a short book with me before getting her tucked in for the night. I have a large number of young reader books for the kids ranging from books like "A Bad Case of Stripes" to chapter books series like "The Impossible Quest". I have always had a crazy love of books and was hoping to pass that on to my children. So far I'm somewhat unsuccessful. Electronics seem to have a hold on them. I finally decided that they spend too much time in front of screens and have imposed some limits. Last night as a result of those limits my lil' girl decided a story would be a nice way to end the evening and "A Bad Case Of Stripes" was her book choice. I love this story, it encourages children to be themselves regardless of how people may think of you for doing so. The little girl, Camilla Cream, battles with how people view her and who she really is. Wanting so badly to be accepted and loved by everyone, she looses who she really is trying to become what everyone else says/wants her to be. In the end she decides that she wants to be herself and that it's ok if she is not what everyone thinks she should be. My daughter loved the story and caught on quick to what it was all about. I know that bullying is a big problem that has actually been around forever and I think this book helps kids understand that people can say things that hurt you but you can really only protect yourself by loving yourself. If you love yourself for who you truly are, false words are just that, false words and once people see they can't break you down. They usually stop trying to. At least that's my experience. The best think I can give my kids is confidence in themselves. I try to let them know that for the most part people who hurt other people are usually hurting on the inside themselves and can't help but lash out at others. Being kind in return can often diffuse the situation. Another book we read is "What Does it Mean to be Kind?" That was also a book that was along the same lines in terms of being kind to everyone no matter who they are or how they treat you. We really enjoyed that as well. Both books are from Scholastic book orders and you can find them on their website. www.scholastic.com The site is currently down until August due to it being a site primarily for schools and it is summer vacation right now. HAPPY READING!! I am from a family of crafty people. My grandmother is a seamstress and also crochets, my mom can make things with leather, create amazing cakes and any kind of food as well as build just about anything out of anything. My dad can also build anything. So you can see why I love to create things and share them with everyone!
Here is an example of my mother's ability to create beautiful leather items. She creates/finds a pattern and makes things that have different themes based on what/who the item is for. This particular lamp is for a motorcycle rally raffle donation. She did a beautiful job and it looks great on or off!! She does occasionally do custom projects and enjoys making other's happy with her work. Although I do have a hard time getting her to charge what they are worth. I also struggle with pricing, I usually under price as does she because we want people to afford the items. Unfortunately that usually causes us to loose money on our supplies or time. Something like this takes hours, days and sometimes weeks depending on our available schedule so under charging usually makes the labor free when it may take 15 or more hours to complete one project. Just a thought, next time you go to a craft fair, don't tell an artisan that you can get it cheaper at Walmart, because Walmart items aren't meticulously hand made and don't match the quality. That is a statement that offends pretty much everyone in the room. And to be honest if that's how someone feels they should avoid Craft Fairs altogether. Ok so I don't want to end on a sour note. I encourage everyone to be creative regardless of your perceived talent, do it anyway, you never know what your capable of until you try! Sometimes you find you are extremely creative and can make things someone else can only dream of creating. You will also come to appreciate good craftsmanship! It's here....Summer! With summer comes certain events that I participate in every year including the county fair art show. I enter two pieces every year in hopes of winning a prize or just some recognition for my art and enjoy seeing all the art on display.
I feel like there aren't enough venues for artists to be discovered or displayed. Where I live the fair is one of the most viewed mostly because it is at the fair and when people go to enjoy the midway they stop to see the displays as well. I am a professional graphic designer so I enter in the professional category every year, I also enter my children's school art projects into the youth category based on their ages. They love to see their work on display and getting ribbons as well. This year I did a drawing of my daughter in pastels and also a watercolor painting. The drawing I did just from a photo I liked of my daughter when she was littler than she is now. The watercolor was inspired by the current political dilemma at the US/Mexico border. I wanted to portray the pain of separation for children from their parents. I don't want to offend anyone with my work but I have strong feelings about harming children to punish parents and I needed to let some of that frustration I have been feeling out through my work. So below is the painting I will be entering this year. I'm sure it will cause a stir but I hope the piece can be appreciated for more than just it's political statement. The watermark/name on it is to deter duplication. So now that I am an oily mom I love my young living oils for so many reasons. I use lemon as a detox, cleaner and just a lovely scent to diffuse. I use Thieves in all my cleaning and Grapefruit also as a fat blaster in a vege capsule and in my cellulite rub. But my favorite oil to date is peppermint. It has so many uses and my kids love it too!! Check out all the great things you can use it for!!
https://www.myyl.com/msessentiallife n My life seems to be a constant circle of work, dishes, laundry, running kids to sports and other chores every day. I do squeeze in at least an hour a day for crochet, reading or just wasting time on my cell phone, in an effort to wind down. Sometimes it's hard to not get sick of everyday responsibilities when all I really want to do is draw/paint, crochet, sew or make fun, healthy stuff with my Young Living essential oils.
I have been working on an easy project for myself (I never make myself anything) and I love the pattern I found. It is a super easy short sleeved sweater which could be long sleeved if I was going into fall. I'm hoping to finish it soon so that I can wear it on our vacation this summer, when the evenings get cooler. This is not my own pattern so I have the link below. It can be altered to fit different sizes, the one I'm making is a large. It is adjustable based on your own body measurements tho. It is found on the HeartHookHome blog. The Image above also includes the link and belongs to Heart Hook Home as well. I will post a picture of it completed once I get it all put together! In my last post I told you about the Young Living Essential Oils and the journey I have just begun. I made up some of those Liquid Xanax Roll-On bottles. Today I wanted to introduce the oils that go into that recipe. Each one has it's own attributes and can help with any number of issues you may have on a daily basis. I love that oils give me a way to change everyday life in a natural way, making my life and my family's life better. The Oils in this particular Liquid Xanax blend are Lavender, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang and Grapefruit. They are diluted for topical use using Young Living's V6 Massage oil. I am posting a pdf file with an info card on each oil so that you can get a general idea of some of the things each oil can help with. Also if you are another distributor, I took off my contact info and there is space at the bottom of each card to add your own. There are also JPG images if you prefer to use those. I did add an information sheet on Cypress oil as well. I love all the uses it has! If you have any questions or if you would like to order any oils or maybe get started yourself with Young Living you can visit my site below or contact me via msg or my contact page. https://www.myyl.com/msessentiallife I am also on facebook under Essential Life, I would love for you to join my group!
Recently I became an independent distributor for Young Living essential oils. I have been driven by the fact that my daughter is extremely allergic to mosquitoes and I am not happy with the idea of putting bug repellent chemicals on her daily during the warm seasons. I have done some research and tried some mixtures that were made by others who have suggested the use of essential oils to replace the repellents sold in the stores.
I have had good luck with them and decided to try my own. Now that I have a small collection of oils myself I have had friends ask about this "liquid xanax" oil mixture and decide to make some up to try. I'm not a doctor and I don't know alot about how to fix anxiety but I have had excellent results on other oil mixtures for sleep and the bug repellent, so I figured why wouldn't it work. I firmly believe that God put everything we need to survive on the Earth naturally and so essential oils back that up for me. I use Young Living oils because of their Seed to Seal Guarantee. * Essential Life * Click this link to my webpage for more details or to become a retail or wholesale member so you can get your own oils. I found a recipe for the "liquid xanax" on ZenOils Blog, and you can click their link to read their article for more elaborate information. Here is the recipe, copied straight from ZenOils: The best way to craft your Liquid Xanax recipe is by using a 10ML glass roller bottle. Add the following oils:
